Captain's Match Report

I am sure, like everyone else in the Society, I look upon playing our December event at Kings Hill as one of the highlights of our golfing calendar. The course is always in excellent condition and the two-course carvery we normally enjoy has become such an integral part of our festive gathering. But for obvious reasons it was always going to feel and be different this year. One of the things I have missed being able to meet up and have a chat and enjoy the friendly banter that is such a part of our Society. So, pulling into the car park of an eerily dark Kings Hill on a soggy Friday morning was a sobering reminder, if one even needed one, that this year things were going to be very much different.
Mind you, things did immediately start to pick up with Tim handing out some goodie bags in which were some lovely sausage rolls, courtesy of Dave Verga, our scorecards and, in anticipation of some liquid cheer to come, some plastic cups. So, thanks to him and thanks to those who passed the bags along to the following groups.
The start times this year were about an hour later than usual, so it was not until 10AM that my group, which included Tim Grimes, Steve Farley and Sean Downs teed off. The threat of some misty, showery rain was never far away but as soon as we got to the first fairway (by which time I had already devoured my sausage roll) you could tell that, despite the weather over the past few days, the course was, as we expected, in excellent condition. As our front nine progressed, I started to think I could possibly end up with a reasonable overall score, and I was far from unhappy to come off the ninth having scored 14 points. We then went to the pro shop to be served with our very welcome bacon roll and coffee and having picked up the swag of Christmas cheer from its secret location headed off down the tenth and then on to the eleventh which is where we had decided was the best place to set up the drinks stop. Having a little noggin is of course all part of what Christmas is about so this stop allowed us to raise a glass (plastic cup) and to wish our playing partners, and those in the group following, a happy Christmas.
For some reason from the eleventh onwards my round went steadily down-hill and as the holes ticked by, I realised that I would not be troubling the scorers that much after all. Anyway, many thanks to Tim, Steve and Sean for the laughs and being great company and as for the golf, there is always another day, whenever that may be!

Anyway, when all the scores were totted up, from the 29 members who took part, Stuart Verga took Division 3 with 33 points and Michael Bourner took Division 2 with an excellent score of 36 points. However, with an impressive score of 38 points was Barry England.
Therefore, many congratulations to Stuart and Michael and especially to Barry who as the overall winner, receives the Christmas Cup.
And for the record the average score for the day was 27 points and I should also make mention of the best guest who was Paul (sorry we do not have a surname for him), who from the five guests taking part ended up with an excellent 33 points.
Finally, I want to say thanks again to Tim, and also Dave, for all they did behind the scenes to make our day the absolute best it could possibly be. Thanks also to Peter Tweddell for taking the score cards home with him and producing the results and posting them on the website so quickly.
And therefore, all that remains for me to say is despite these difficult and challenging times I hope you and yours have a safe and happy Christmas. What the new year may bring who knows but let us hope that the promise of better times to come during 2021 will be a reality sooner rather than later.

Our next scheduled event is at Pedham Place Golf Club, London Road, Swanley on Friday 15 January 2021, and as usual Tim will send further details nearer the time.

Stay safe and merry Christmas.
