The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men, Gang aft agley, An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain, or promis’d joy!; Robert Burns
It was never going to be that easy, having Captain’s Day within the restrictions of Covid, so when it was announced back in May that lockdown restrictions would be eased from 21 June, moving Captain’s Day to 24 June, whilst being a Thursday, seemed a reasonable idea. We could play our round of golf and then enjoy dinner without having to worry too much about any restrictions. And then rules were changed! And we were still under the Rule of 6.
And so, it was, with those famous words of Robbie Burns ringing in my ears, I headed off to the Weald of Kent for my Captain’s Day. One thing that was great, was the fact that the weather was set to be dry for the day, whereas the previous Friday (the original date) the heavens had opened, and it had poured with rain nearly all day long.
Before play got underway, we spent a few moments in silent respect for Graham Nunn, who had recently passed away. Graham was a long-standing member and ardent supporter of MAGS, and a past Captain, and our thoughts at this time are with his family and friends, and the community he served as a Captain in the Church Army.
As to the day itself, it was great to see so many of us able to be out playing golf, and the prospects for a great day were looking good. I had arranged for us to have a ‘pink’ (yellow as it turned out) ball challenge, as well as a putting competition, both of which I am glad to say proved very popular.
I had the great pleasure of playing with Steve Farley, Dave Elsworth, and Ian Marshallsay. I am not saying who was responsible, but our pink ball went AWOL on the second hole, so if nothing else we could thankfully forget all about the tactical talks we had before the start; about the water on the ninth and sixteenth holes, and just get on with enjoying our round, which we did.
The course was in better shape than when we last played there, although some of the greens did have quite a bit of sand on them, making them a bit two paced and difficult to read. Not that it made much difference to me as I can hardly read my putts anyway.
As the round progressed, a welcome sight on a warm day was Dave Verga racing down the 5th fairway in a buggy laden with cool beer, chocolate, and crisps. Mmmm, lovely! So, many thanks Dave for doing that, very welcome and much appreciated by us all.
Back at the clubhouse I only had time for a quick drink before having to go and pick up my wife Lisa, so my apologies to anyone who was not able to join us for the evening, and I did not get to speak to. And must say here a big thanks to Dave Verga and Peter Tweddell for collating the score cards.
And so, to the evening. I must say from my perspective the evening went really well and it was lovely to be able to sit down together and enjoy a good meal and a couple (oh, ok, quite a few!) glasses of wine. So, many thanks to all who were able to come along, and especially to respective wives/partners/friends.
One more set of thanks from me must go to Tim Grimes. Arranging any of our golfing days can be something of a challenge, but particularly because of Covid, the arrangements for this Captain’s Day had to be reset and adapted all along the way. And whilst it was ‘my’ Captain’s Day, Tim took a more than helpful lead in liaising with the Weald over such things as numbers, timings, and dinner menus.
And so, to the winners; when all the scores were totted up, from the 32 players who took part, Division 3 went to Mark Parsons with 36 points and Paul Damper took Division 1 with 33 points. But with a score of 36 points, Phil Scotton not only took Division 2, but on count back also the winner of the Captain’s Trophy with a score of 36 points. Therefore, many congratulations to Mark and Paul, and especially to Phil.
Nearest the pin prizes went to Stuart Ryan, Steve Tothill, and Ian Rowan, with Roy Goodhew getting nearest the pin in 3 on the 9th.
Other winners on the day were Tim Grimes, Steve Tothill, Bob Crouch and Paul Keenor who with a score of 26 points were the only group to safely return their pink (yellow) ball.
And the Putting competition was won by Stuart Ryan, with an excellent score of 30 Putts.
And so that was Captain’s Day 2021. Many thanks to everyone for all their support and as you know, our next event is at Dale Hill Golf Club, Wadhurst, TN5 7DQ and Tim has, as you will know, already circulated the details.
Hopefully see you at Dale Hill and in the meantime, stay safe!
