One the best things with our Society, is the opportunity over the year to be able to play somedifferent and varied courses. Last month we had Nizels, and this month weheaded towards the coast for Chestfield, which has a club house that I thinkyou could describe as having a lot of character. And although it didn’t troubleme, there were warning signs, particularly around the upstairs restaurant wherewe had our breakfast, warning you to duck your head because of the low beams!
This month, I was joined in my group by Trevor Woods, Steve Tothill and Brian Goodhew.
The first hole is a reasonably gentle opener (unless you find the ditch!) but then the par 5 secondstarts to set the tone for the course and the need to try and take account ofthe challenges presented by its slopes and undulations. I have to say at thispoint, that on a lovely day like we had, the views across to the sea from thesecond green and some of the other holes around the course were, I thought, prettyspectacular.
After the front9, the relative scores in our group were all pretty close, but then the back 9 didstart to favour those of us who were playing a bit more at the higher end ofthe handicap. One thing that caught us all out in our group, particularly onthe front 9, was the speed of the greens, and therefore getting the pace right, either when chipping on or putting, needed some careful thought.
On completion ofwhat had been a really enjoyable round, it was nice to be able to sit outside andenjoy a drink and the sunshine. As the score cards came in it was obvious that somemembers had put together a very good round of golf which was reflected in thefact that from the 35 members who took part, the average score was 32 points.
We then enjoyedan excellent two course dinner with service to match, and therefore thanks to allconcerned at the club for that.
As to the Divisionwinners, these have been updated in the light of being number crunched throughPeter Tweddell’s computer system. Therefore, Division 1 goes to Phil Scottonwith a score of 39 points, Ian Rowan takes Division 2, also with a score of 39points, and Tony Jacobs takes Division 3 and the Summer Shield with a trulyexcellent score of 44 points. So very well-done Tony.
And just to say thenearest the pin winners are as on the website and our best guest was MikeFairbrass, who came in with an excellent round of 29 points.
And so, the yearmoves on and our next meeting is on Friday 15 October 2021 at Faversham GolfClub, Belmont Road Faversham ME13 0HB, which of course is a firm MAGS favourite, and as usual Tim will circulate all the details in the near future.
In the meantime, stay safe and hopefully see you on the 15th.
All best wishes
Geoff
