Southern Valley Golf Course 01474 568568
|

With its well-maintainedfairways and greens, and at times, great views across the Thames Estuary, SouthernValley is one of those golf courses which in many ways is a bit of a hiddengem. It’s such a shame therefore that its land will be required at some point inthe future for the construction of the Lower Thames Crossing.
Anyway, for now,37 of us assembled under threatening skies and the promise of a blustery round ofgolf. The day did however get off to a really good start with an excellent fullMonty breakfast.
This month I wasjoined by Brian Goodhew, John Peachey, and Dave Elsworth. Teeing off at 9.30, the threatened rain was already being blown in on a cool breeze, so despitestill having to use a buggy due to continuing back problems, I was more thanhappy to be able to use its shelter from some of the worst of the blusteryshowers that continued to blow through for the whole of our first nine holes. Notthat the weather appeared to bother Brian too much, who was striking the ball reallywell and racking up a good number of points. One thing that became clear earlyon was that, as promised, the fairways were in very good condition, with the greensin the main running pretty true.
By the time wecame off the ninth green, the weather prospects still looked pretty bleak, butthen true to the good ’ole British weather, by the time we were ready to teeoff on the tenth, the squally rain showers clouds were clearing, and the sunwas coming through. Just what was needed to dry out and feel a tad warmer. Itis only when you play the back nine you realise just how close the course is tothe Thames; and it is hard to imagine that in time it will be swallowed up bytarmac.
Coming off the eighteenthgreen, I really thought at least one in our group would be in the shake up fora prize, but as more results came in it became obvious that it was all going tobe too close to call.
Followingdinner, announcing the winners for the day showed just how close the resultswere, with countback coming into play across the board.
David Withers tookDivision 3 with a very good score of 36 points, just edging out Brian Goodhewon countback. Sean Downs took Division 1, also with a score of 36 points, and thewinner of Division 2 was Ian Marshallsay, who also had thirty-six points. But crucially,Ian had an excellent score of 20 points on his back nine which meant he also tookthe overall honours as the winner of the Armistice Cup.
And just to say,the average score for the day was 30 points and the nearest the pin winners areas on the website. And of the three guests who joined us, Ian Batts came out ontop with 31 points.
And so, we move onand our next meeting is on Friday 17 December 2021 at Kings Hill Golf Club, FortuneWay, Kings Hill, West Malling ME19 4GF. Going on past history, this will beour standout event of the year, and truly a day not to be missed. Therefore, pleasekeep a special look out for all the details which Tim will be circulating inthe near future.
In the meantime, as you know MAGS members are invited to take part in the ‘Bill’s Charity GolfDay’ taking place at the Weald of Kent on Thursday 25 November 2021.
