Captain's Match Report
As I drove to Broome Park in the pouring rain I feared we were in for another Darenth Valley! Broome Park is such a picturesque setting with its imposing Manor House. However, it didn’t look much like that on my arrival as conditions hadn’t improved so we consoled ourselves with cups of coffee then a full English breakfast. The room had swelled with an ensemble of our members and their guests, an excellent turnout. Once breakfast was over it was time for the AGM with Ian Rowan as chairman getting proceedings started. Other members of the committee chipped in with their comments and reports. Dave Verga advised that the Society was financially in a good place and said that part of that was down to Tim Grimes astute negotiating skills on securing venues at very favourable rates. Pete Tweddell asked if anyone had any concerns re the handicap system in operation, everyone seemed content with how it was operating. I was formally adopted as Captain and Darren Parker has been appointed as my Vice Captain. Bob Crouch’s last action as Captain was to present the Winters Pairs Trophy to Mark Parsons and Paul Damper. My first job as Captain was to present Paul Damper with the Champions League Trophy, well done Paul, thoroughly deserved. AGM closed and it was time to play golf.
As we left the shelter of the Manor House the rain was still falling like cats and dogs. Waterproofs on, golf kits readied and we are off. Shortly after teeing off the weather started to ease and skies brightened and eventually the sun came out. Thanks to my playing partners, Pete Tweddell, Owen Callaghan and Kevin Gladwell for a very enjoyable round.
After last months debacle at Darenth Valley when mud clung to everything and the course was indifferent, today even with the heavy rainfall the course drained well, fairways and greens all good. A big thank you to Tim in the Pro Shop for his help and all the ground staff.
Many congratulations Derek as overall winner and well done to all the other winners.
