Captain's Match Report
The Len Hall Trophy: Mud, Meat, and Miracles
Despite the weather gods spending the week trying to turn Kent into an inland sea, someone clearly made the right sacrifices. The clouds parted just in time for us to descend upon Upchurch, though the "Sunshine Gods" were likely just laughing at us trying to lug our bags around.
The Highlights:
- The Great Cull: We knew in advance it was "carry only." While 4 players decided their backs, hips and kneecaps were more important than glory, the rest of us channelled our inner sherpas and marched on.
- The Fuel: We started with a full-English that was "sumptuous" enough to make the first three holes feel like a heart rate monitor test.
- The Fourball: I suffered—I mean, enjoyed—the company of Owen Callaghan, Adrian Reeman, and Dave Elsworth. The banter was high, the skill was… present at times, and we managed to avoid any international incidents.
- The Groundwork: Surprisingly, the course wasn't a swamp. It played remarkably well, though I suspect some of us were just happy not to lose a ball in a literal bog.
The Main Event (The Food):
Back at the clubhouse, we were faced with a Roast Pork dinner featuring "Teeth-Shattering Crackling." It was a high-stakes meal—it was either going to be delicious or end with a collective trip to the emergency dentist.
The dessert was a fancy mousse/meringue/fruit/coulis situation. I believe the technical culinary term is "The Thing I Ate Before I Forgot the Name," but it went down a treat regardless. Upchurch’s kitchen continues to be the MVP of the society.

Where: West Malling (Spitfire Course)
When: Friday, 20th February
Gentlemen, it’s the Valentine Cup. Bring your best game, or at least a clean shirt, so your partners don't divorce you when you get home late. The Spitfire course is waiting to humiliate us all, particularly that 18th hole, and I look forward to seeing you all there.
