Fellow tourist, what can I say? With very little chance for any in depth review, it certainly seemed to me that things went unusually smooth and rather well.
Everyone not only managed to attend Gatwick at the allotted time with the prescribed paperwork but they also managed to board the plane and depart. Not only that but (and I have checked) we all made it home on the same day! A new epoch in the world of Rowan tours and the first time ever this achievement has been reached I think we all deserve a pat on the back.
Arriving at the good old Dom Pedro was like returning to a favourite restaurant or bumping into an old friend. There we were again littering up the foyer, frightening children with our gargantuan pallid frames in the pool and wondering if they might have anything nice for brekky.
In order that we didn’t all get too bored with the same fodder we had a slight twist to the format this year by the introduction of the Ride Her Cup red and blue team format. After the first day both teams were exactly level and on the last day with the pink ball adjustments there was still only one point in it, Dave having marshalled his forces wonderfully to overcome a mid competition hammering.
Personally, I felt the format worked well, firstly as it meant only waiting for three four balls, secondly it added a new dimension and thirdly I enjoyed (ish) playing two courses twice. I have no idea whether playing one twice then the other twice was better than daily alternating because I think there were probably more influential factors in play than the familiarity with the course. So much so that the second time of playing Millennium we tee’d off from the wrong hole on day two despite playing the course the day before.
My scores wavered from poor on day one to adequate day two abysmal day three and winning on day four, again more by luck than judgement I’m sure. This trip more than any other, I was amazed at just how much my game can vary not even from one round from a front nine of 8 points on day two to a back nine of 19? I would love to suggest that there was a technique I adjusted, and it all came right but as far as I was concerned I was doing the same stuff each time.
I would like to thank all those who suffered a round with me on the bad days (you know it’s a bad day when your buggy partner runs out of supportive things to say about hole 8 and starts on about the weather) and also those who got to witness the emergence of some actual golf on the better days. It was lovely to have a round with some of our newbies this year, Messers Marshalsay, Farley and Downs and witness the emergence of Mr Farleys game whereby he was outdriving some of us and putting out to win the match for the blue team. It was lovely to see the joy at being successful at such a simple game, sadly the older sages amongst us were less surprised when the following day all had not gone so well, such is the fickle nature of the game there is always enough to bring us back and always more to do.
Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get a round in with Phil Parker or Bryan England, who were both also on tour for the first time but maybe next year. It was great to have you both along this time thank you.
In terms of the results the gold prize envelopes went to messers Tweddell and Damper on day 1 with scores of 32 and 30 on Laguna and Millennium respectively
Day 2 it was messers England Jnr and Moore with 31 and 32
Day 3 Stewart Ryan and Simon Muir both shot 31 to win and day 4 myself and Mr Self scored 30 and 31 to take the cash, although it being the charity day and us being lovely chaps the prize pot was put back into the charity bag.
So a mix up of names from both teams winning with between 30 and 32 a vote of confidence for the handicap system and also fairness of the teams I think. A special mention for Mark Moore scoring the highest of anyone on either course with a 32 especially as this was twice what he scored the day before in last place on Laguna day 1 a real turn around well done.
As previously mentioned, the Reds were victorious by 7 points thanks to a great performance on the last day.
The lost ball competition was won by Timmy TT who despite not being sure if the hotel was left or right of the entrance road and also wandering out of the 19th hole bar, not left back to the hotel but right to go around the back way! Did have an accurate assessment of how wasteful, wayward and generally wonky we all could be around a golf course. With scores after the day one losses of 74, predictions ranged from 168 to 402 with TTT plumping for 256 and the actual lost being 246 a shade over ten each. Well done Tim!
Thank you all for your contribution to what felt like a happy, enjoyable and successful trip. A special thanks to our ever faithful statto Pete who despite throwing me a slight curveball on day three, put in a lot of effort at a time most of us were relaxing and enjoying ourselves and probably fielded more inane questions than even I did. Your input and suggestions with little tweaks and improvements were invaluable especially as after the first night I was operating on severely reduced capacity and what was left was utilised on keeping me mostly upright, thanks mate!
As ever planning has started for 2020 so expressions of interest please.
We can go back to Vilamoura with its well-known charms and do exactly the same again. Or play two different courses or a new one each day. The two I chose this year were the cheapest so any variations will be at greater cost. We could go to a cheaper hotel?
We are also looking at an all inclusive deal to turkey it would be a 7 night break, four rounds of golf all buggies booze and food included and its about £680 plus flight so I would suggest about a grand - if you factor in food and drink costs for Vilamoura I would suggest it’s a better deal. Hotel is evidently five star with usual amenities four or five restaurants, pool etc but probably no where local to go off site?
If you have any other good options ie somewhere with good courses that’s not going to be wet and cold and we can reasonably afford, please let me know. Sorry I can’t make Poultwood but at MAGS on the 19th,I will be presenting (or dropping off on way home as it isn’t staying in the house) the glorious Wedgwood urn which traditionally has been the presented to the tour winner.
Thanks once again to one and all and here is to next years tour
Cheers
Ian

SO 16 SO FAR WHICH GETS US A TOUR THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT GENTS. IN ORDER TO GET THE VERY BEST DEAL WE NEED TO BOOK THE GOLF BREAK BY END OF JULY.
Flight costs rise slowly as times gets closer to departure so ideally the sooner the better.
Two key points I will need a deposit for the flight and the break by end of July so please bear that in mind. (We are negotiating exact levels at the moment but worst way its circa £135).
Secondly if you know someone who may be interested but isn’t on the list chase them up. If we can get to 24 again that would be great. Mags members in preference but tbh anyone who you can vouch for, with the deposit money by the end of the month works for me !
I would rather avoid the sweat of being saved by private Ryan again next year, so will close the book at the end of the month and as we can’t go with an odd number realistically 20 or 24 would be our targets. If we get to 24 its marginally cheaper as we get a 1 in 8 go free deal so try your best gents
I will keep you updated but see what you can generate by Dale hill on 19th the earlier we can book flights the better really
It would be good to see Lewis, Marshalsay, Englands, Parker, Muir et al all on the team sheet for TT2020 get calling make someones day!
